On 12 October 1992, an earthquake, the Dahshur earthquake, occurred at Cairo, Egypt. The earthquake has a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. This is because of the subducting of the African plate under the Eurasian plate.
The earthquake caused Cairo to have 127 people dead, 2139 people injured and 75 apartments collapsed. There was a total of about 370 people killed, 100 schoolchildren trampled, at least 3300 people hurt and 116 building destroyed thoughout Egypt. In response to the earthquake, the government built emergency shelters and set up 3 tent cities in the northwest and south Cairo. They also provided emergency housing to about 2000 families and had also promised families who had lost family members in the earthquake $1500 each.
My reflections:
I feel that to minimize the damage from such disasters, the government can use better quality materials to build buildings so that in case of such disasters, buildings would not collapsed so easily and the number of casualties will be minimized. Also, if possible, there should be a section in the news on the television or in the newspaper to tell us if any disasters are approaching so we can have enough time to make necessary preparations for the disaster and maybe fleed to other countries for the time being until the chaos is over. This way, the number of casualties will also be minimized.
